New Gantry

(posted 30/09/2024)

The new carriage gantry has been erected outside our raised track engine shed. This gantry has been installed in order to help with moving rolling stock from inside the shed out onto the track. Some of our rolling stock, like passenger carriages, can be heavy and awkward to lift out of the shed and onto the track. This gantry seeks to help with that. A winch will be installed on the rail of the gantry, which will allow us to suspend rolling stock and then manoeuvre it out onto the track with a minimum of effort.

Finishing Touches

The new signage for our station has gone up. This is a feature that our old station did not have. We will also be putting up a general information board so the public will be able know who we are, what we do and when we operate when they visit the park. A big thanks to all members who helped out with the preparation and installation of the signage.

Marlay Station Complete

(posted 28/05/2024)

After almost two months of construction, our new covered station - built to server both our raised level and ground level track - is complete! After our old station was disassembled, the new structure - designed by our very own John Curtain - was erected in it's place. It consists of a covered canopy (with skylights) supported by ten posts, braced together with curved arcs. The canopy is lined with wooden panels, similar to those adorning the canopies of train stations in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The station has one raised line track, and two ground line tracks passing through it. The station also has two queue pens in it, and thanks to a concrete platform and covered rails, is fully wheelchair accessible!

This milestone marks the completion of the first phase of the Railway Renovation Project. With phase 1 complete, we will be holding a publicity event in the near future with DLR CoCo, who very graciously allowed us to undertake this project. We now await their go-ahead to continue with the next phase of the project.

Marlay Station Reopens

(posted 19/05/2024)

Saturday the 18th of May was a big day for the society. It marked the reopening of our station for our 2024 running season. While the structure is not 100% complete, it is function enough for us to operate rides out of. With this first phase of the railway project completed, expect bigger and better things to come!

Old Friends and New Faces

(posted 04/05/2024)

Our recently rebuilt 201 class "Victor", renamed after the loco's original builder, today took our new wheelchair carriage out on her maiden voyage.
The wheelchair carriage is a brand new piece of rolling stock, capable of accommodating even a motorised wheelchair, with stable ramps for boarding, vacuum brakes, padded seats and a robust suspension and construction to ensure a comfortable ride.
While designed for wheelchair users in mind, it can also accommodate other passengers that may not be able to be use our other passenger carriages.
It marks an important milestone in our mission of making Model Engineering enjoyable and accusable for all, and we hope to make good use of it on our upcoming ground track rebuild.

Changes to the Railway

(posted 19-03-2024)

Visitors to Marlay Park may have noticed that much of the station on the miniature railway has disappeared. This is not a bad omen for the future of the railway, but is necessary maintenance to accommodate new and exciting changes to the railway, such as a much longer and interesting track layout, and the lifting of the current restriction whereby only children can travel on the railway. No more disappointed parents! We will also be adding a special coach capable of carrying wheelchair users on the railway. Station construction is expected to commence shortly.

In the workshop, locomotives are being overhauled to ensure that they can cope with the demands of the new line. Photos of ongoing work will be posted in the Gallery page.

As work progresses, further news, updates and photos will be posted here.
